The UN sharply criticized a new Russian law, known as the “civil death” law, targeting opposition activists who have been sentenced in absentia or fined under political articles in the Russian Federation. The UN called these measures a cruel form of repression.

“In essence, this is targeted mass punishment of opponents of the war and critics of the government in order to make their lives outside Russia unbearable,” Katsarova said.

According to Mariana Katsarova, the UN Special Rapporteur, this law targets journalists, anti-war activists, and all opponents of the Putin regime.

Katsarova calls on the authorities of democratic countries to provide support and protection to activists who have left the country, issue them documents, not block their accounts, and not subject them to deportation to Russia.
