Warsaw memorial honours poet Larisa Heniush
A memorial event titled ‘I lived for you, Belarus’ brought together participants in Warsaw to honour poet Larisa Heniush and her place in Belarusian historical memory.
Today in Warsaw, a memorial event was held in honor of the poetess Larissa Genyush entitled "I lived for you, Belarus". The event was organized by Tatyana Martynenkowa of the "Razam" solidarity movement.
On 9 August 1910, Larissa Geniuch, a poet who became a symbol of the anti-Soviet resistance, was born. Her legendary perseverance and steadfastness inspired and continue to inspire those who opposed the repressive system of the communist regime. In 1948, Czechoslovakia extradited the poet and her husband, Janka, to the Soviet Union. The genius was tried for treason. She was sentenced to 25 years in the camps.
Larisa Geniuch is a well-known Belarusian poetess, who until the end of her life did not accept Soviet citizenship, preserving the citizenship of the Belarusian People's Republic. Her book "Confession" - touching memories of her life and Soviet imprisonment in the Gulag - became a bestseller.
The event was attended by Вячеслав Сивчик - Honorary Consul in Belarus of the Government of Independent Tatarstan in Exile and Nafis Kashapov - Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Independent Tatarstan in Exile, in his opening words Nafis said the following: Thank you for the invitation, patriots of the Belarusian people, and for organizing a patriotic evening. If for the Belarusian people, Larissa Genush is a legendary historical figure, then for us Tatars, he is the great poet Gabdulla Tukai.
